Spacious Volkswagen ID.4 built with comfort and performance in mind
High tech, electric and homegrown are just a few of the superlatives that describe Volkswagen’s entry into the world of electric vehicles. The ID.4 is a real looker, too!
Now assembled in Chattanooga, Tenn., where VW invested more than $800 million to up-fit its state-of-the-art assembly facility, the all-electric ID.4 features an upgraded design and widened color palette, along with battery power options that range from 63 kWh (201 horsepower) to 82 kWh (295 horsepower) and an EPA-estimated range from 209 to 275 miles.
“When Volkswagen first came out with this – I was so happy they introduced an electric option,” said Robert Nixon, a salesperson at Hendrick Volkswagen of Concord (North Carolina). “They went straight into electric, and it was an SUV. A lot of the American market also want an SUV.”
Nixon has been with the Hendrick Automotive Group-operated dealership for six years now. His family has had Volkswagens for as long as he can remember, so it was natural for him to select Hendrick Volkswagen of Concord as a career.
“Very proud of the product and happy to sell it to my customers,” Nixon beamed.
Three ID.4 models are available (Standard/Pro, S, S-Plus) with exterior features that include gloss black highlights for the front bumpers, 20-inch rims on S models, and eight paint colors so customers can personalize their vehicle they would prefer.

“Customers are very shocked,” said Nixon, when describing how customers feel when first seeing the vehicle. “They absolutely love the look of the vehicle.
“The biggest item people talk about is the lighting,” he continued. “You have light bars that go around the front grill and the back. The VW emblem will also light up. It really catches your eye when someone sees this go down the road.”
Technology & Comfort
Every ID.4 now offers a 12-inch infotainment display, wireless mobile charging, wireless App-connect, SiriusXM, along with entertainment options that include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink smart phone communication. The vehicles also come with “Hello ID,” which allows drivers and passengers to interact through voice command.
Stitching, leatherette seat side bolsters, basic upholstery and new interior trim colors, with stone and nutmeg options highlight additional interior amenities. S models have upgraded interior availability, including enhanced stitching and heated rear seating in the S-Plus trim.
Technology also includes its driver assistance and safety: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, active blind spot monitor, front-and-rear park distance and high-beam control all included. In addition, Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE is also standard, offering adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and emergency assist. Add to it the more than 64 inches of cargo space and the flexibility of fold-down seating; the ID.4 is quite versatile for the family.
“(For) families that are looking to get into electric vehicles, it's nice to have an option like the ID.4 because it has a ton of space,” Nixon said. “If you need to optimize space inside the vehicle, you can fold down the seats.
“It is very techy,” he added. “You have touchless buttons and the radio screen integrates really well with the infotainment system. You can even use your hand to wand through some of the features you are looking for. Regarding (safety) assist systems, they are all fully available and that’s a standard item.”
It also has one of the more advanced navigation systems, which includes the ability to limit range anxiety.
“They are built to show drivers exactly where charging stations are located,” Nixon noted. “If you are making a long trip for example, put in your destination and the vehicle will show all the electric chargers along the way. That is whether you are making a 20-minute drive or one that’s two hours or more, you have an idea where your range is, and an idea of where you can charge your vehicle. They make it easy, especially if you want to take an hour or two to go eat, grab groceries, etc.”

Low Center of Gravity
The ID.4 battery is located between the axles, maximizing the vehicle’s lowered center of gravity. Highlighted by VW’s signature multi-link suspension, telescopic dampers and an optimized steering rack that is located in front of the centerline wheels, the ID.4 is stable in cornering and comfortable for highway driving.
“People are very interested and love the ride quality,” Nixon said about customer reaction. “They are very smooth. The batteries sit below your feet at the center of the vehicle, and the center of gravity is so low. There so many positives with all the technologies in these cars. The ID.4 powertrain is instantaneous; there is no lag at all when you hit the pedal.”
Each version of the ID.4 --- standard, pro and AWD --- feature 19-inch wheels and all-season tires, while the S-models have larger 20-inch wheels with different five spoke or two-toned machine options. There are also numerous braking options, including the standard disc in the front and drum in the rear, with two different drive modes for its regenerative braking system. The D (Drive) mode gives it a traditional feel, coasting as you get off the pedal, and the B (Brake) position provides a heavier amount of regenerative braking, with its higher rate of battery recovery and clearly noticeable deceleration.
For those thinking about purchasing an EV, or if you have owned one for a while now, the Volkswagen ID.4 is a tremendous option when it comes to affordability, technology, comfort and performance.
