Larson, No. 5 pit crew visits New Hanover High School in Wilmington

NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson and members of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com pit crew visited with automotive technology students from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina during Hendrick Automotive Group’s second Hendrick. Get Set. Go! grant event of 2023.

After an informational Q&A that included Larson, Hendrick Motorsports pit crew director, Keith Flynn, and Hendrick Motorsports Head Pit Coach Jon Carvin, Hendrick Automotive Group team members joined in presenting a $25,000 check to The Hanover Center for Trades & Technology program. The automotive retailer chose the Hanover Center for support because of their innovative curriculum and focus on new teaching technologies.

“Hendrick Automotive Group was able to bring CTE (Career Technical Education) to life for our students,” said Dr. Charles Faust, Superintendent, New Hanover County Schools. “This is a specialty program. Student go through classes, get their certifications and can choose whether they want to join the workforce or go on to college. The CTE program provides so many different opportunities for students.”

For many years, Hendrick Automotive Group team members have worked closely with the New Hanover team on advising the needs and requirements of the automotive industry. With education and opportunity, graduates have nationwide employment opportunities in an industry with great demand for their skills, and yearly earning potential exceeding $100,000.

“We have worked with Hendrick Automotive Group for many years,” Dr. Faust continued. “What we love about the partnership is that it’s not one and done. It’s something that carries on throughout the year. This isn’t just about education, it’s about teaching student how to network – and events like this open up those avenues.”

As part of the visit, Larson piloted the No. 5 NASCAR Cup Series Camaro ZL1 in a pit stop demonstration. Members of the team are able to lift the car, change four tires and add fuel in 10 seconds on NASCAR race day. A time and choreography that’s taken years of continuous improvement and film study to perfect.

“This is event is a great way for students to learn more about NASCAR and what opportunities are available at Hendrick Automotive Group,” Larson said. “I really enjoy spending time with students, as many of them share the same passions that I do. Had a lot of fun today.”

The Hanover Center for Trades & Technology is set up for student success. By combining the latest learning theory and investing in modern technology, the school is able to prepare high school students for future careers in the automotive industry. From tires and suspension to computers and diagnostics, students learn every aspect of automotive maintenance and repair.

Go! is a grant program that uses the excitement of the HendrickCars.com racing program to spotlight science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the automotive industry, placing more students at the starting line of their future careers. Grant presentations bring together the racing program, local Hendrick Automotive Group dealership teammates, students and faculty to celebrate their school and a high-tech tech future that both the automotive and auto racing industries have to offer.
