Race Recap
Larson, who started 14th in the 400-mile race at Homestead-Miami, lost positions early before green-flag pit stops began at lap 31. Crew chief Cliff Daniels waited until lap 40 before calling his driver to pit road for four tires and fuel. Larson returned to the track in 21st before methodically picking off positions. He was scored 15th by lap 58 and 10th by lap 65. When a caution waved at lap 69, the Elk Grove, Calif., native was up to seventh. After a quick four-tire stop by the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet crew, Larson charged to fourth before stage one ended at lap 80.

After stopping for four new tires and fuel during the break, the 32-year-old driver fell to ninth before green-flag stops began at lap 114. Daniels again waited a little bit longer to call Larson to pit road, this time waiting 11 laps before radioing the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion to pit road for four new tires and fuel. Larson returned to the track in 10th at lap 128 and began his charge through the field. He was fifth on the scoring pylon by lap 149 of the 267-lap race and up to second by lap 162, but was unable to take over the top spot before stage two ended at lap 165.

Following a fast four-tire stop by the No. 5 pit crew, Larson won the race off pit road but was running second when the day’s final caution waved at lap 207. Daniels called Larson to pit road for service on lap 212 with Larson taking the green flag from second at lap 216. Although he dropped several positions, the 2014 rookie-of-the-year slowly gained them back, taking over the top spot with seven to go to secure the win.

“It was far from perfect,” shared Larson during his post-race interview. “I gave up a spot and a half, almost two spots, by hitting the wall too many times. Just proud of myself, proud of the team. Just a lot of gritty, hard work by the team today. So just super pumped and one of the coolest wins in my Cup career because of all the heartbreak I have had here, the heartbreak yesterday, and to just keep my head down and keep digging feels really good. Hats off to the whole team – HendrickCars.com, Chevrolet, Prime, Valvoline, the whole Hendrick Engine Shop and everybody at Hendrick Automotive Group.”

Sunday’s victory helped Larson move up four spots to second in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, just 36 points behind the leader.
