Toyota's Tacoma TRD package adds more horsepower to Fourth-Gen truck
The fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma made a splash at its intro last year, as the manufacturer unveiled its much-anticipated makeover to an eager audience in May 2023. While Toyota Tacoma inventory is now available at our dealerships throughout the country, that initial reveal took place in front of a picturesque Hawaiian backdrop and a sizable online audience.
Tacoma’s have long held the title as the best-selling pickup for 18-consecutive years, a clean-sheet engineering re-make was also in order. Built on its global INGA-F truck platform, the new Tacoma has two new powertrains, rear multi-link suspension and a plethora of exterior changes to mark the occasion.
“With even more off-road capability and the quality, durability, and reliability that our customers expect along with a host of options for every owner, we’re confident that Tacoma will remain the top choice for mid-size pickup buyers when it arrives,” said Toyota group vice president and general manager Dave Christ at the time of reveal.
Like its many predecessors, the Tacoma remains one of the more upgradeable trucks on the market, and this iteration is no different. To go along with its newest truck, Toyota also wanted to provide a real game-changing performance upgrade. It’s TRD Performance at its best.
TRD Performance for a New Generation
Introduced during the Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (SEMA’s) annual convention in November 2023, the new TRD package offers significant enhancements to its power and low-end capabilities.
“In factory trim, the base i-FORCE engine produces 389 peak horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,400 rpm,” said Greg Bernas, vice president, Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Development. “The TRD Performance Package increases power output to 421 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, while peak torque comes on 400 rpm sooner, delivering 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm, broadening the torque band and significantly improving power delivery at throttle tip in. On the i-FORCE MAX Tundra, the kit boosts horsepower from 437 to 469.”
Combined with engine optimization and changes in vehicle software, TRD Performance engineers designed and implemented larger, high-flow dual intakes and paired them with high-flow cat-back exhaust systems to lower backpressure. The package also includes improved throttle response for a sportier driving feel.
Special TRD badging and exhaust tip treatments add to the package’s overall feel.
“We wanted to build on the excitement of the new Tacoma platform and twin-turbo engine -- which already makes monster horsepower and torque -- to develop this performance package,” said Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager, Toyota Motors North America.
The package has a full warranty and is an option during the ordering process. Dealer installed and additional, expanded model options may be available in the future. The additional package has an MSRP of $3,400.
