Five things you can do this weekend in your Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger embodies rear-wheel drive modern muscle. It is versatile and safe enough to be your daily driver, while its appealing retro styling and dynamic amenities make it a terrific weekend option for the enthusiast.
Even though 2023 was the final production year for Dodge Challengers with old-school internal combustion engines, buyers still have a chance to grab one at a Hendrick Automotive Group Dodge dealership. With nice discounts available, HendrickCars.com wanted to join the party and offer a few ways the Challenger can make your time outside of work a whole lot more fun.
Space & Comfort: The Challenger may be the most family-friendly ‘fun car’ out there. With the largest trunk space in the category at 16.2 cubic feet, along with a 60/40 split of the rear-folding back seat, the ability to carry a variety of items is impressive -- from luggage to household needs and everything in between. You can hang out at your local show & shine, and then stop at the grocery to grab a load of items before heading home.

But wait, there’s more. Standard six-way adjustable driver’s seat comes standard in every Challenger, with upgrades that include Alcantara, Laguna or Nappa leather optional upholsteries. Carbon fiber trim also adds a bit of luxury if you so choose. Heated and cooled seating also wraps passengers in comfort no matter which season it is.

Drag Race: Challenger enthusiasts have five different powerplant options, each giving drivers a chance to be weekend warriors at the local drag strip. The supercharged 6.2-liter, high-output HEMI V8 is available in the Challenger SRT Super Stock factory drag car with 807 horsepower. The more road-going 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 Challengers output 717 horsepower at 656-foot pounds of torque, still among the most powerful production vehicles anywhere and very formidable for that occasional grudge match.
The Challenger R/T Scat Pack provides plenty of quarter-mile fun as its 392 HEMI V8 option boasts an impressive 485 horsepower at 475-foot pounds of torque. For the Challenger R/T, drivers can jump into a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that brings a robust 375 horsepower to the table, while the standard, award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 has 303 horsepower.

Car Show: Starting in 1970, Dodge introduced the Challenger to the American muscle car wars. Standard and higher-performance R/T versions are offered in coupe and convertible, a highly attractive coupe with a lot of V8 brute. For those lucky enough to have a 1970 Challenger R/T convertible with an original 425-horsepower 426 HEMI, you have a true collectible that is the envy of every enthusiast.
Motor Trend reported in 2019 that the Mecum Phoenix Auction sold an extremely rare factory HEMI, four-speed 1970 Plum Crazy Challenger R/T convertible for $1.43 million. Autoevolution also relayed that nicely restored HEMI-hardtop Challenger SEs have regularly sold for more than $200,000, with particularly nice ones bringing more than $300,000.
Did You Know? The 1970 “Black Ghost” Dodge Challenger R/T is a legendary story among the Detroit care enthusiast scene. With the mysterious street racing lore of original owner, Detroit police officer Godfrey Qualls, and a few rare options, the car recently brought $1.07 million at Mecum’s 2023 Spring Indianapolis auction. Dodge produced a limited Last Call “Black Ghost” homage edition with an original MSRP exceeding $100,000.

Today’s Challengers are equally impressive, also drawing crowds at the local cruise-in or Cars & Coffee. Hellcat R/T Challengers are the ‘King of the Hill’ when it comes to production vehicle horsepower, and its retro styling takes people back to the days of muscle car heaven in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Dinner & A Movie: Attractive styling and a comfortable interior make for a favorite date night vehicle. The Challenger’s available eight-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, rack-pinion steering and multi-link, short and long-arm suspension make the Challenger a tremendous driver in and around town, on the way to a restaurant or an evening at the local cine-plex.
It’s also safe, highlighted by features such as electronic and roll stability, ABS and driveline traction control, dual-stage driver and passenger air bag systems, low-tire pressure warning and back-up camera.
Weekend Drive: You can take the Challenger on a spirited mountain jaunt, a relaxing ride through the countryside or a run up the Pacific Coast Highway during a perfect day.
With the largest available touchscreen infotainment screen in its class at 8.4 inches, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SiriusXM, the Challenger is perfect for a relaxing drive. Combine that with the car’s heritage-invoking analog gauges and intuitive set up for its drive modes, radio tuning, volume controls and climate control knobs, you have all the creature comforts needed to entertain a young family. Sing along to your favorite Taylor Swift song with the car’s optional 18-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system.
Don’t forget its two USB-A charging ports and available 4G LTE hot spot service.
