Each one of those vehicles also goes through a rigorous 182-point inspection process. It is one of the industry’s most comprehensive checks on pre-owned vehicles under $20,000. Manufacturer-trained service technicians complete the same process for every vehicle offered at Hendrick Automotive Group dealerships throughout the United States. With the interest currently surrounding affordability, the HendrickCars.com blog wanted to take a deeper look at the process. Highlights below:
VERIFIED VIN: The vehicle identification number (VIN) may be the most important part of the process, as it is the heart of your vehicle’s story. If something does not match – we walk away. Like you, our team members dismiss any vehicle that does not meet requirements for quality or safety.
THE PROCESS: In partnership with NAPA Auto Parts, Hendrick Automotive Group’s inspection process is formulated to be the same for every vehicle. From the front to the rear, the engine compartment and both the interior and exterior, every vehicle has a comprehensive baseline of safety and reliability built-in. A specially built inspection cart from NAPA is the center point of the process, with all the tools needed to make the needed checks.

DOOR TO DOOR: Every vehicle that qualifies for the inspection process starts with a check of the doors, ensuring items such as handles, child safety locks and seat belt safety anchors are in working order. Also checked are the rear fuel filler, taillights, turn signals and hazards.
VEHICLE FRONT: The next big step in the process is at the front of the vehicle. Headlights, turn signals, hazards and daytime running lights start the process. The items such as the hood latch release, check oil, check coolant, system hoses, brake fluid set, hydraulic fluid check, power steering fluid and washer fluid are all inspected and replaced if needed.

PRE-DRIVE PREVIEW: Before the test drive, a service technician checks the indicator lights, smooth start, abnormal exhaust noise and starter check. Other items inspected include the parking brake, steering wheel, wipers, visor and mirrors.
TEST DRIVE: Another milestone of the inspection is the test drive. Checking operations such as dash instrumentation, speedometer and odometer, along with engine and exhaust performance. It is also important to evaluate the transmission and differential, along with traction control, brakes, turning and alignment.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Also known as the ground-level inspection, this process checks on engine efficiencies such as smooth idle, exhaust leaks and the automatic transmission’s fluid level and condition. Manual vehicles have the transmission fluids checked after the electrical system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: An important check is the electrical system, which is a common weak point in many pre-owned vehicles. In this check, the battery and terminals are inspected, cleaned and secured, and starting and charging systems are also investigated.

BELTS & LEAKS: Oil, coolant and coolant reservoirs receive examination in this portion of the process, including the belt, drive and tensioner. Other items include engine and transmission mounts, and air tubing. If needed, vacuum systems also receive attention.
TIRES: Tread depth and pattern, sidewall condition and tire pressure are inspected in this process. Brakes and pads are also checked here, along with the calipers, pin seals, wheel cylinder, brake lines and hoses. Finally, lug nuts are reviewed for binding or damage.
RAISED INSPECTION: Once the tires are complete, the vehicle is raised on a lift where undercarriage leaks are inspected, including engine oil, coolant, transmission, and transfer case. Differential fluid levels and fuel system leaks are also checked.

UNDER CHASSIS: An investigation of a worn undercarriage receives scrutiny here, as the wheels and hub bearings are also checked for excessive play. CV axles and differentials are included in this process as well.
SUSPENSION: Inspections include axles and steering rack boots, while also ensuring springs and sway bars are in working order. Also checked are the steering rack and suspension for damage or looseness. Finally, the vehicle is also checked for steering system leaks, worn struts or shocks and any damage to the exhaust system.
Once the car is certified for sale, the vehicle receives and oil and filter change, along with a state safety inspection.
