Toyota Camry: A car that fits every occasion

What if I told you 200,000 miles is a reasonable goal for a Toyota?

If they receive regularly scheduled maintenance and the consistent care they deserve, significant mileage such as this is realistic. As many owners can attest, their car is up for the challenge. That includes one, Victor Shepperd, a Chicago-area Uber driver who already has well over a million (!) miles on his 2007 Camry -- an impressive ode to the brand’s lineage.

First introduced in 1983, the Camry has consistently met the needs of the modern-day family. However, it wasn’t until 1997 and the model’s second generation that it truly came into its own, starting a run of 21 consecutive years as America’s best-selling vehicle. Its reliability is now legendary; an attribute that continues to bolster its newest model.

“The Toyota Camry has done its job so well for so long that it isn’t merely a sedan it’s an institution,” wrote Car & Driver’s Jonathan Ramsey, reviewing the 2024.

Reliability for a New Generation

Currently, in its eighth generation, the Camry celebrates 40 years as an American brand by giving customers 18 choices. From the Toyota Hybrid system to the performance-enhanced Toyota Racing Development (TRD) model, the vehicle fits every mode of driver.

The 2024 comes in multiple editions -- LE, SE, XSE and XLE grades -- along with an additional styling package known as the SE Nightshade Edition, which leans into its performance heritage with a sports mesh grille, black-trimmed headlights, black rear spoiler and bronze-finished aluminum wheels. All-wheel drive is also available for every model outside of the TRD.

Exterior-wise, the Camry comes in eight different exterior colors: Cavalry Blue, Predwan Gray Mica, Ice Edge, Ice Cap, Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Reservoir Blue, Wind Chill Pearl and Supersonic Red.

There are also a few styling characteristics that distinguish the vehicles. The comfort LE and XLE versions have a more defined lower fascia, with the XLE featuring 18-inch alloy wheels. The SE and XSE models are a bit bolder, with honeycomb-styled grills, side-vent inserts and side-vent accents creating their look.

The Brand New Camry

Toyota engineers offer the best of everything to their loyal customers for 2024, highlighted by a choice of three different powertrains: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 3.5-liter V6 engine and the highly efficient Toyota Hybrid System.

While an entry-level powerplant, the four-cylinder is a technologically refined performer, outputting at 203 horsepower at 6,600 RPMs, and topping out at 184 pound-feet of torque at around 5,000 RPMs. The top-of-the-line XSE maxes at 206 horsepower with its dual exhaust, while the AWD versions output at 202 horsepower for the XE and 205 horsepower with the XSE.

Through direct injection (and additional port injectors), variable valve timing and cooled exhaust recirculation, the four-cylinder-powered Camry offers an impressive level of efficiency and higher fuel economy, heightened by the brand’s now famous direct shift, eight-speed automatic transmission.

The V6 engine also has some juice, outputting at 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Married with its efficiency, drivers still get good gas mileage and an added bit of on-road performance. However, 2024 will be the last year Toyota offers a V6 in a Camry.

Toyota Technology Maximizes Value

Available with every model, the Toyota Camry Hybrid combines a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor with a total output of 208 horsepower, and an estimated 52 mpg by the manufacturer. The Camry Hybrid is one of Toyota’s 16 electrified models.

Technology is also a focus for drivers and passengers. A seven-inch TFT Multi-Information display is the brand’s top-of-line entertainment screen, which includes amenities such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A nine-speaker JBL Audio Plus system is standard on the XSE and XLE V6 models, optional on the TRD, with JBL Premium available for XSE and XLE across hybrid and fuel variants.

There are also three interior color options: ash, macadamia or black. For the XSE and XLE grades, premium perforated leather is standard. The Sport XSE also has a special red interior available.

Safety and Toyota Go Hand-in-Hand

As expected from any Toyota product, the 2024 Camry is loaded with safety features. That begins with the brand’s pre-collision with the pedestrian detection system, which helps a driver detect another vehicle, pedestrian or object with an audio warning. The system helps react to the moment if the driver fails to see the obstacle.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or Full-Speed Range DRCC allows drivers to set a preset speed, which controls the distance between vehicles, monitoring the distance between vehicles.

Other safety items include lane departure alert and steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist and road sign assist, the latter is a system that detects speed limit signs, stop signs, ‘Do Not Enter’ and yield signs through an advanced camera.

TRD Toyota Camry

The Camry also comes with a performance version.

With aero-enhanced design, side skirts rear diffuser, gloss black front splitter and rear diffuser, the TRD Camry caters to enthusiasts with its aggressive styling and its robust 300-horsepower V6.

While it has fewer amenities, it's crafted for looks and a sportier feel, set off by its matte black 19-inch alloys, cat-back dual exhaust, polished stainless steel tips, sharper suspension and red TRD stitching and badging throughout.

When it comes to the Camry, the possibilities are almost endless.
