Meet BMW's next-generation electric vehicle platform

BMW recently introduced their next-generation electric vehicle platform, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse (or “new class”) X.
The ‘X’ stands for the brand’s longtime model designation for its lineup of Sports Activity Vehicles, which comes on the heels of its new EV sedan platform announcement -- the Vision Neue Klasse -- which was first introduced in 2023. Production vehicles on the Neue Klasse X platform to begin scheduled assembly at the end of 2024, in time for the 2025 model year.
“Together with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X showcases the breadth of our future BMW model line-up. The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future -- from the sporty sedan, with all its derivatives, to modern SAV family,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “In this way, we are underlining that the Neue Klasse is much more than just a car or a specific concept; it is redefining the BMW brand -- and, at the same time, will be more BMW than ever.”
The Vision Neue Kasse X builds upon their customers’ desire for efficient driving dynamics and an active lifestyle. According to BMW, the new platform combines “a clear exterior design language with a bright and spacious interior.”

Leaning on History to Design the Future
The original terminology dates back to 1962 when the brand’s Neue Klasse 1500 also reigned in a new design era. One that influenced BMW’s vehicle presentations for the next few decades.
Much like how its historical bloodlines gave BMW its bold brand presence, the Neue Klasse X architecture will be clear in its exterior design language, emphasizing an instantly recognizable exterior, with extensive use of glass and warmer colors to highlight its brighter, more spacious interiors. The wheels will be a focal point as well, with fewer lines and a lower profile contour making for a simpler look.
The platform further develops how an EV drives, which is the brand’s bread and butter when it comes to its core. A new software package, developed by the in-house technology team, focuses on offering a smooth ride within every driving environment.
Specialized lighting and sound effects will also enhance a passenger's overall experience with the vehicle.
The Ultimate Electric Driving Machine

“Neue Klasse means BMW driving at an even higher level,” explains Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “The BMW of the future will have four new super-brains: high-performance computers working smartly together on what, up until now, was processed separately. We developed the first super-brain completely in-house. It integrates the entire powertrain and driving dynamics with up to ten times more computing power.
“The second super-brain will enable the next quantum leap in automated driving,” Weber continues. “Going forward, we will combine four key control units in a single high-performance computer. The result will be more dynamic performance, more precision, more efficiency and even more fun to drive.”
Increased ground clearance opens greater space options for travelers, while longer wheelbase versions, short overhangs and more traditional lines will also accompany BMW’s move to this new platform.

Gone is the large kidney grille in favor of a smaller, more vertical version of the brand’s iconic signature. A lighted border, to ensure a more environmentally friendly material is used, replaces the traditional chrome.

Each new EV SAV constructed by BMW will offer a slightly elevated seating position, along with a redesigned steering wheel with multi-functionality at its heart. A widescreen display will not only house key information, it will include voice interactivity and a 3D heads-up display for select models. Center-positioned, display integration will fit seamlessly into the overall instrument panel, allowing both front passengers access to infotainment options. Large window areas with warmer colors will also increase the feel of spaciousness, bringing additional light into the vehicle.
The EV will carry four electric motors, which have a battery setup capable of making upwards of 1,300 horsepower. There will be a variety of options available based upon the model and options selected.
Materials that are Environmentally Mindful

The interior will utilize what’s known as Verdana, a plant-based material that is mineral-based and petroleum-free. The texture will be used in the lower portion of the door paneling and in the center console area. The side skirt and front-and-rear apron areas are also using recycled mono-materials. Areas of injection molding will now utilize Mari-time plastics, which include items such as discarded fishing nets, etc.
Also, the materials used for construction and the methods of assembly help improve the overall recyclability of the vehicle. For that, most of the vehicle is built on mono materials, which fits the brand’s goal for total circularity.
