The all-new, 2024 Dodge Hornet compact crossover has placed a priority on the driver, as power, technology and drivability are at the forefront of its capabilities. With four versions to choose from – including the plug-in electric hybrid R/T coming later this summer – this new ride has everything an active, budget-minded person would need for their daily jaunts around town.

The Fun is Just Beginning

GT and GT Plus Hornets have already started to hit showroom floors. Both versions host a standard all-wheel-drive system that’s powered by a highly advanced turbo-charged 2.0-liter four cylinder that boasts an impressive 268 horsepower and 295-foot-pounds of torque. The top-of-the-line R/T is Dodge’s first plug-in hybrid offering, centered around a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Combined with a 12.0-kilowatt electric motor, it outputs 288 total horsepower at 383 foot pounds of torque. Drivers can expect up to 30 miles of electric motor range on an approximately 2.5-hour Level 2 re-charge.

A nine-speed automatic transmission features a shift-on-the-fly technology, shift-map changing and manual capability. The GT and GT Plus also offers different drive settings, including a sport mode that sharpens throttle response with higher RPM upshifts. For the fullest driving experience, the ESC “Off” mode unlocks its complete power and torque capabilities while still being stabilized by the vehicle’s electronically limited slip differential. For the upcoming R/T offering, the PowerShot mode gives the vehicle a quick 25+ horsepower boost through the electric motor, terrific for spirited driving and passing situations.

“The twin-scroll, low inertia turbo charger and direct fuel injection enhance power and efficiency,” said Brandon Staton, salesperson at Hendrick Dodge RAM FIAT of Cary, North Carolina. “It’s also really quick and full of the technology for those that enjoy the driving experience. This is a truly practical, fun-to-drive vehicle.”

“The power this vehicle has is very attractive to customers,” added Desmond Gray, Hendrick Dodge Jeep RAM in Hoover, Ala. “It’s inherent in what the Dodge (family of vehicles) is all about. There are not many vehicles in this segment that have the capabilities this one does and I love the Dodge products.”

“You can feel the power,” Desmond added. “It’s definitely a step up vehicle.”

Fuel mileage on the Hornet R/T plug-in electric hybrid has yet to be released, but the GT and GT Plus versions get 29 miles per gallon highway (mpg) and 21 mpg city.

Technology Aplenty

While both vehicles fully engage the driver, the R/T version marries all of the manufacturer’s latest driving technology together.

“The Hornet R/T features standard brake-by-wire technology for precise control and improved performance in all conditions,” Staton added. “The reinforced bracketing helps increase the bodies overall stiffness as well.”

The now available GT is full of technology and amenities. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes standard, as does an interactive 10.25-inch infotainment display with Amazon Alexa connectivity. Additionally, a 12.3-inch digital gauge package offers vehicle vitals for a total of 22.5 inches of screen access. Sound wise, the upgraded GT Plus has a 14-speaker Harmon-Kardon stereo system.

Like many modern-day vehicles, the cabin is oriented towards the driver with the raised transmission lever positioned to the console’s center. Leather is available in the GT Plus, while black upholstery and red stitching come standard.

Safety is a Priority in the New Hornet

Safety is also a priority in the new Hornet. Driver assistance systems include rear-parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, full-speed collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The vehicle also has a pedestrian and cyclist detection system, a ParkView back-up camera and a 360-dgree surround camera view with acoustic and visual warnings for an additional level of safety.
