There’s nothing better than a spring or summer road trip. The opportunity to explore new places and see unfamiliar sites offers much anticipation and joy for many. However, while it’s supposed to be a time for relaxation, it could also become a nightmare if you aren’t prepared.

Before you load into the family truckster, we suggest considering the below checklist to make sure everything is in place. Even if nothing were to happen, you need to be prepared just in case. Let’s take a look at a few of the actions you need before leaving on your next adventure:

PLAN YOUR ROUTE: While this seems obvious, there is a way to best optimize your time. Examine all the routes you can take and plan any potential stops ahead of time. What about construction zones or road closures? How about the distance and amount of time you’ll want to be in your vehicle? If you are in an EV, are there charging stations available? The more planning you do, the more prepared you will be to deal with unexpected delays.

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE: Make sure everything in your vehicle is in working order. Check tire pressures, fluid levels, brakes and lighting. If anything seems amiss, we would encourage you to schedule an appointment with a Hendrick Automotive Group service technician in your area.

THE ESSENTIALS: Include a first-aid kit, emergency supplies (flashlight, batteries, rubbing alcohol, bandages, etc.), spare tire and tools, and all necessary medication in case the unexpected happens. You will be thankful you did.

WATER & FOOD: Don’t forget to pack a few snacks and bottles of water for your journey. Have enough to provide a few hours of sustenance if you have an emergency or vehicle becomes disabled in the remote area. While we are talking about spring and summer, it is especially important during the winter – especially if you have a longer daily commute.

ENTERTAINMENT: Keeping passengers occupied during your trip can be an underrated but important “luxury” during a long road trip. Books, music, games and other forms of entertainment can help keep the peace and let the driver concentrate on the task ahead.

WEATHER: Drivers can encounter multiple weather hazards throughout, often on the same trip. By reviewing weather reports, you can stay prepared and adjust. Also, make sure you have inflated tires with the proper amount of tread, and check to see if your windshield wipers are fresh and ready to go. Taking precautions now can make like a whole lot easier later.

SECURITY: Make sure your home is safe and secure before leaving. Unplug any items, and consider stopping any deliveries or mail, to avoid drawing attention to your absence. Also, BE CAREFUL broadcasting on social media that you are away from your home, and alert your family, friends and neighbors to keep a watch while you are away. You may even want to let them know of your departure and arrival times, periodically checking in when appropriate.

The more pre-trip preparation you do, the better and more relaxed your road trip will be. Enjoy your well-deserved time off and let your teammates know that you will see them on the other side!
