Quarterfinals finish for Anderson, HendrickCars.com team in Norwalk
Greg Anderson has always enjoyed the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series yearly visits to Summit Motorsports Park. He has regularly shined there, and with three wins, he was one of the most winning active drivers on the roster for this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. Anderson picked up a round win in the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro and reached the quarterfinals on Sunday, and he looks to build on that as the hot months of summer racing come into full view.
Friday was meant to be the day to get down to business, with two qualifying runs on the schedule for the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet and the Pro Stock crowd – but Mother Nature cruelly shook her fist and washed away the opportunity to get data to put into play on Sunday. Two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, though, were run through to completion, and Anderson's team was able to find what was needed to get the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet prepared to race.
A nice 6.615-second pass at 207.37 mph got him on the board in the top half of the field, and the second session, in which Anderson recorded a 6.709, gave the team the opportunity to test the boundaries.
Qualifying results:
Q1: 6.615-second at 207.37 mph (No. 5)
Q2: 6.709, 205.85 (No. 5)
Anderson was fired up for Sunday and the opportunity to collect a fourth Summit Motorsports Park win and his first of the season for HendrickCars.com, and in the first round of eliminations, his Chevrolet showed it wanted to shine. The five-time world champion clocked a 6.619 at 206.67, one of the quickest passes of the round, in his defeat of KB Titan Racing teammate Kyle Koretsky.
In the quarterfinals, Anderson was a respectable .029 at the tree to opponent Aaron Stanfield's .018 to kick off what should have been a great race, but when the HendrickCars.com Chevy began making moves on the track, Anderson had his hands full. He expertly drove through, and the car began to settle, but momentum was lost. Stanfield won the match, 6.638 to 6.709.
Race day results:
R1: Greg Anderson defeated Kyle Koretsky, (.025-second reaction time) 6.619-second at 206.67 mph to (.021) 6.642, 206.57
R2: Aaron Stanfield def. Anderson, (.018) 6.638, 206.04 to (.029) 6.709, 205.85
"It was a disappointing ending to what was a great week, but there is no sense in hanging our heads about it," said Anderson. "The good news for the KB Titan Racing team is that we are continuing to see results throughout the stable. We have a lot of work to do before Denver, and to be honest with you, I can't wait to get back to work. The day ended on a high note for KB Titan with Matt Hartford and Dallas [Glenn] racing for the trophy, and I can't wait to be back in that position with my HendrickCars.com Chevrolet."
The next Pro Stock event on the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series tour will be the 43rd annual Dodge Power Brokers NHRA Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, July 14-16.
