Your battery is a critical part in the operation of any vehicle. From its ability to start, to providing the power needed to run your stereo, lights, power steering, etc. … your battery is what gives your vehicle life.

With up to seven years of service before it needs replacing, your vehicle’s battery may not be top of mind. However, be on the lookout for a few telltale signs that your battery is about to meet its end because it could leave you stranded if it fails.

CORROSION: With age, many batteries start to leak fluid and build corrosion around connection points. Not only is this causing a slow drain on your battery’s available power, it can also be a danger to your health. If you see corrosion of any type on your battery, you may want to visit a service advisor to understand where the life of your battery stands.

WARNING: This is straightforward, but if you see a warning light on your dashboard indicate trouble with your battery – take note. It may signal your battery is nearing its end and needs checked.

ELECTRICAL “BUGS”: Does your vehicle’s radio clock flicker or blink out on occasion? If you feel your electronics are behaving “strangely” or not as they normally operate, your battery may need replacing. These “bugs” can be the early warning sign you need to test the viability of your battery.

STARTING ISSUES: A telltale sign your battery is starting to go is the starter having trouble turning over or starting the vehicle. Additionally, needing multiple times to overturn the starter is another sign you may need to test its output.

DIM LIGHTS: Dimmed interior lighting is one sign your battery may be in need of a checkup. If you notice your lights feel lowered -- even on the brightest setting -- it could mean your battery is not maintaining enough power to disperse evenly throughout your car. It is a red flag and we would suggest you have your battery tested.

Your battery is the lifeblood of your vehicle, but it’s often overlooked because of how long they last.

If you suspect something is amiss with your vehicle’s electronic systems, we encourage you to set up a battery checkup with a Hendrick Automotive Group service advisor.
