When is it a good time to change your windshield wipers?

When owning or leasing a vehicle, always pay close attention to the condition of your windshield wipers. Their lifespan may be shorter than you think, as the industry standard for changing wipers is between six months and a year, depending on your daily driving conditions.

If you live in an area that produces harsh weather (snow, sleet, ice, heavy rain), you may need to change your wipers more frequently, as the rubber surface may wear out more rapidly.

Below are a few more factors as to why you may need to change your wipers:

VISIBILITY: One of the biggest warning signs your wipers need swapping is window streaks. If your wipers are leaving streaks, or not clearing your windshield as they had in previous usage – start considering a change.

AGE: This may seem obvious, but if you can’t remember the last time you changed your wipers – it’s definitely time to switch them out. Like tires or rubber-based weather stripping, windshield wipers can dry out without usage and threaten loss of visibility.

CHANGING SEASONS: Checking the condition of your windshield wipers every change of season or prior to a long trip is a good rule of thumb. This especially holds true before winter and spring.

PROACTIVE CLEANING: If ice or sleet have accumulated, we recommend clearing the entire windshield area prior to utilizing your wipers. Higher amounts of accumulation could render wipers ineffective, or even damage the blades themselves during use.

UNNECESSARY USE: NEVER operate wipers when your windows are dry. If there is any dirt or debris, not only could it streak your windshield but permanently scratch the surface.

Maintaining your windshield wipers may be one of the most important things you can do to keep your driving experience safe.
