Advantages of Buying an Electric Vehicle

There has been a lot of recent discussion about the differences between owning an electric vehicle (EV) versus a more traditional gas-powered version. Like most things, there are upsides and downsides to every scenario. If you are thinking about a new EV, here are a few items to consider:
LOWER OPERATING COSTS: EVs have lower overall operating costs than gas-powered vehicles. According to Duke Energy, an electric vehicle can provide a family with more than $1,000 a year in fuel savings. For example, the cost to charge a 60-kilowatt-hour (KWh) EV fully with more than 230 miles of range is less than $8.00 (home charging).
ENVIRONMENTAL: EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emittance. The Alternative Fuel Data Center (U.S. Department of Energy) does note that EV benefits do vary based on the source of electricity used to charge it.

QUIET OPERATION: Electric motors produce very little noise, making for a peaceful driving experience. EV drivers do have to pay a little extra attention to pedestrians, as they may not recognize that a vehicle is near.
BETTER ACCELERATION: EVs produce maximum torque from a standstill. If you are an enthusiast, the acceleration can be intoxicating and can be much more noticeable and enjoyable than a gas-powered vehicle.
IMPROVED RANGE: As technology improves, so does the overall range of electric vehicles. Many EVs now have ranges that extend beyond 300 miles, with the most recent Lucid Air offering a 520-mile range. With added infrastructure, EVs will become widely accessible throughout the United States.

CREDITS: There are tax credits on EV purchases in 2023. According to the IRS website, you may qualify for a $7,500 clean vehicle credit. Consult with the IRS website or your tax planner to understand the details.
